Whether you own your own home or not, you have property that is of value and you probably want to protect it. This is why you are able to obtain insurance for most types of property that you own.

Many people don’t know that homeowners and renters insurance cover belongings that aren’t necessarily in your home. Should your vehicle get broken into resulting in your cell phone, iPod, and other personal belongings being stolen, your homeowners or renters insurance will reimburse you after deductibles are met. The same goes for personal items that may be stolen from your hotel room while you are away on vacation.

Many mortgage holders require their borrowers to have homeowners insurance. Their requirements may be minimal, as they are only concerned with the structures on your property. It’s always would be wise to talk with someone about increasing your coverage and further protecting your property.

Another thing to enquire about when obtaining homeowners or renters insurance is discounts. Discounts may be available for:

  • New Homes
  • Non-Smoking Households
  • Combined Policies – Having your other insurance policies with the same insurance company.
  • Homes with Alarm Systems
  • Seniors or Retired Residents

There may be other discounts, be sure to ask your insurance company or agent.

If you are concerned about paying premium costs, there are ways to help lower premiums. It’s better to have some coverage than none at all. If you need to go with high deductibles or lower your coverage amounts, it’s better than no insurance at all. You can always make adjustments to your policy should your financial situation improve. The main thing is, to make sure you are protected should you become a victim to theft, natural disaster, or other potentially damaging losses.
